one more day left of the baltimore grand prix. >> 11 news reporter george lettis made a pit stop by the track to see how things are going. the race to the end of the second annual grand prix of baltimore is in the home stretch. so far, the new organizers of the race say despite literal bump in the road, it's been a success, even though they know they won't make money on this. >> we came on board so late. we had about 100 days and we are realistic. to do it right, you need more than 100 days. >> making money was a big issue for downtown restaurants last year. a lack of marketing and access to places like harbor east, federal hill and little italy brought disappointing business. so far this year -- >> but this year it's improved. they're more familiar with what roads are closed and which ways they can travel so if you come to little italy, you will not be blocked by any barricades.

>> the races on saturday ended at around 6:30 instead of around p.m. last year and we are told they redesigned the track to allow better access to neighborhoods. but do these crowds compare to the average saturday night? >> it's definitely slower. it's a holiday weekend. we were hoping the grand prix would bring in more business for us. we had meetings, we were trying to pool everything together and get a party going for after the races. >> the city and race organizers know there are going to be growing pain. >> our role model is the long beach grand prix. it had a rough year or two getting started but it's now in its 35th year. it's revitalized the downtown of long beach. we see this event with the potential to do that for baltimore or for the east coast. >> speaking of money, the promoters of the race have promised to may vendors and the

city back the money owed for the race as opposed to what happened last year. in downtown, george lettis, wbal tv-11 news. >> make wbaltv.com your pit stop for baltimore grand prix information . >> this morning, baltimore city police are investigating a shooting that involved several of their own officers. police say two detectives observed an armed man sitting on the steps of a house. when they approached, he went inside. we are told the detectives followed him and the man drew a semi automatic handgun and pointed it in the general direction of police. >> they saw an individual who they believed to be armed with a handgun. as they approached the suspect, the suspect ran inside of the house. the officers pursued him. once inside the house, the suspect pulled out a handgun and the officers fired on the

suspect. the suspect is in a local hospital. >> the detectives have been placed on routine administrative duty pending an investigation into the shooting. that shooting comes a week after police fired on a man in east baltimore. >> in baltimore county, police have charged a man with an stabbing in essex. in the 500 block of eastern boulevard next to sinix bar they found darrien darryl wilson lov. an acquaintance is being held without bail. county police were also called to the 7100 block of darlington drive in parkville tee bee's place bar, where police found 38-year-old tavares lonell jones. investigators say he was an employee at the bar and was stabbed while breaking up a

fight between patrons. police are looking for a suspect. >> city fire officials are trying to learn what sparked a fire that killed one person in east baltimore. the fire happened just before 3:00 saturday in the 1500 block of halbrook street. investigators say crews found the body of a man inside the home, pronounced dead on the scene. >> he was a good guy. he was a real good guy. everybody loved him in the neighborhood, everybody loved him. i loved him. the whole neighborhood knew him well. >> police say while searching the building, one firefighter fell through the floor into the basement but was not injured. >> in anne arundel county, police are trying to determine what caused a car accident that killed two people. police say around 10:00 friday night, officers were called to the 3600 block of patucksen river road. driver and a 14-year-old

passenger were flown to the hospital where they later died. investigators are trying to determine if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash. >> the shooting at perry hall high school has local businesses looking for ways to help. serpico's pizza and passaa -- pasta and swan song are donating a portion of proceeds to the family. >> this family is in a tragic place and anything we can do to help them get out of that tragic place they're in and let them know we are behind them with prayers, then that's what we do. >> mccallister says the store will match any doinations made over the weekend into the weekend. >> in the race for the white house, president obama is age -- aiming to build momentum and

>> time is about 5:14, we're off to a quiet start. 72 degrees, light west wind at 3 miles per hour. in the tropics, the tropics have been active over the last couple of weeks. this is tropical storm leslie. kirk is way out in the north click but this storm, 70 miles per hour, almost a hurricane and just off to the east-northeast of san juan, 300, 400 miles. it looks like it's on a track to head over towards the east coast and for the most part will stay off shore. this is a computer model plot of all the forecast tracks. when you go into the longer range, some of these forecasts take this close to the new england coast next weekend so we will keep an eye on leslie. it will probably become a hurricane over the next 24 hours. we have our own tropical stuff to deal with.

this was the remnant low of isaac or ghost of isaac, if you will. you can see it spinning across southern illinois, producing heavy rain, showers and thunderstorms there. here at home it's dry for the time being. strong thunderstorms and heavy rain in ohio but in baltimore, nothing on the radar now and will probably stay dry this morning. if you're doing things outside today, the earlier in the day, the better. it's muggy this morning. the dew points are in the low 70's. you'll feel that outside. 72 at the airport, 69 in parkton, 72 degrees in randallstown. variable clouds, good chance for showers and thunderstorms but not until this afternoon and this evening. if you're going to try to take out the boat, watch for lightning in the afternoon, east-southeast wind at 10. high tide at fort mchenry at 8:22 and the seven-day forecast, good chance for rain tomorrow as

isaac will be closer to us or what's left of it. 83 on monday for labor day, 60% chance for storms and tapering off in the middle of the week down to 40% on wednesday and clearing up finally on thursday and friday with temperatures in the low to mid 80's. >> there's only two more days left to check out the 131st annual maryland state fair and after a slow first weekend due to weather. fair officials hope to make up for it with big crowds this labor day weekend. officials say there's something for everyone, from food to exhibits to the carnival midway. >> there's everything from the wonderful food to horse racing, to our carnival midway to all exhibits, the livestock. we like to think there's something for everyone. >> country music sensation, the band perry played last night as the fair concert series. the fair is open through labor

day, tomorrow, until 10:00 p.m. a maryland staple drew a crowd on saturday. handy international set out to break its own record for the world's largest crab cake. it took 200 pounds of crabmeat, eggs and seasoning and more than nine hours to cook and the massive cake was broken up, made into individual sandwiches. >> it's the best crab cake i ever tasted. >> wow. >> wonderful. and it was very exciting. we saw it cooking, then we saw the lid come off, we saw the numbers. great. great fun. >> the crab cake weighed in at 305 pounds, crushing the previous record of 253. that is a lot of crabmeat. >> i want my crab cake to be individual. >> just for you, not part of the masses. >> yes. want it to be a group cake. >> maybe they'll make you your own. i think they should.

>> 5:21 and 72 degrees on tv hill. in this morning's medical alert, the f.d.a. has approved a new pill to treat hiv. the problem is, many patients won't be able to pay for it. the drug, stribuild, is a

combination of four different hiv medications. experts say the once-a-day pill is as effective as other drugs on the market but the convenience comes at a high cost -- $28,000 a year. the manufacturer says the price is in line with other treatments for hiv. it's reported that 150 people diive year from allergic reaction to food. a growing number of kids suffer from potential fatal food or insect allergies so one back-to-school supply that might come in handy is an epipen. it could certainly be a lifesaver. >> this just gives you a little extra dose really quickly and helps reverse the processes set in motion when your immune system overreacts to allergen. >> experts say don't take chances with allergies. everyone -- especially school

coast as cleanup conditions, hundreds of thousands are without power and patience is wearing thin. gabe guiterez reports from new orleans. >> in parts of louisiana, the waters are receding but so is the patience. >> this is the first time i've seen trucks in this neighborhood. thousands of line cruise crewse on the move as the gulf coast struggles to recover from isaac. the slow-moving hurricane knocked out power to more than a million customers in louisiana, mississippi and arkansas. tonight, more than 400,000 homes and businesses are still in the dark, the vast majornity louisiana. outside new orleans, bev goddard was separate for shade after losing power four days ago. >> 95 degrees inside my house so you're not sleeping, not eating a lot. >> this family just got power this afternoon. >> how much inventory do you think you lost? >> we lost between $500 and

$700,000 worth of inventory, workers are restocking shelves. >> we didn't see any entergy trucks. i don't know where they were. >> frustration is so high that the president of jefferson parish is calling for a state investigation. >> i wouldn't be as upset and infuriated if they were out doing the work but there's no presence on the streets. >> louisiana's main power company, entergy, says crews from around the country are working as fast as possible. >> this was a slow moving category one storm that sat over the city for almost two days and this was more of a wind event. >> in plaqueman's parish, power, or lack of it, is not the most pressing concern. some people still can't see their homes. others are thankful for what they salvaged. >> i saved everything on my second floor and my little boy's

tortoise. that's all he wanted. >> the b.p. oil company is donating a million dollar to hurricane isaac recovery efforts. agencies in louisiana and mississippi will receive half of the donation. b.p. says it's assisting employees and families in the flooded areas. >> an apparent tornado touched down and caused damage at a small airport in arkansas saturday afternoon. hangars were torn apart and small planes scattered like toys. in greenville, north carolina, more than 100 fans were treated for heat-related illnesses during the football game on saturday. of the 300 treated, officials say more than 50 had to be taken the hospital.

a couple of people suffered heart attacks or seizures. a man is dead after falling from the upper deck during a football game at the georgia dome. 20-year-old isaac grubb of tennessee was watching north carolina state play tennessee when he fell about 35 feet and landed on another fan. both men were taken to the hospital where grubb later died. an investigation will take place but officials say it appears to have been an accident. >> beachgoers in massachusetts received quite a surprise saturday. the discovery that forced officials to close the beach. >> and more on a deadly mouse borne virus overtaking yosemite national park. national park. >> rain in the forecast.

weekend. i think it will stay off the delmarva coast but something that perhaps could come by the boston area next weekend. this is the ghost of isaac. you can see circulation pattern with a tropical signature to, it producing heavy rain. strong thunderstorms and heavy rain in parts of ohio but here at home right now it's dry and i think will stay that way a couple of hours but you can see shower activity pop up north of us in pennsylvania so the further into the morning, the better the chance some of that rain will catch up to us. 72 at the airport, 74 in catonsville. variable clouds today with chance for showers and thunderstorms. not a instead rain, if you have stuff to do outside, you want to go downtown, to the fair, you should be able to sneak it in. the high around 84. taking the boat out today, watch

and acre after acre of raw, natural beauty. this holiday weekend, an estimated 75,000 people will park butemite national this pristine reserve comes with a warning. >> there's information about the hantavirus. >> the hantavirus, a rare, rodent borne disease, has been found in the popular camp site. the centers for disease control confirms six cases in yosemite so far, two fatal. c.d.c. says 10,000 campers may have been exposed to the deadly virus spread primarily through deer mice. >> symptoms are wide ranging, similar to those you would get with the flu -- muscle aches and pains, fevers, chills, headache. >> we've upped our education and outreach. >> with 91 cabins in yosemite temporarily shut down, the park has been flooded with some 2,000

>> only five of the more than 20 pilot whales that came ashore on a south florida beach saturday have survived despite a day-long effort to save them. officials say two calves and two juveniles have been transported for rehabilitation. the rest died of natural causes or had to be humanely put down. the pod of 22 whale came ashore yesterday morning and it's still unclear why. a discovery saturday morning caused beach closing in rhode island this holiday weekend because at dawn a local fisherman spotted the carcass of a 13-foot great white shark that washed ashore. the beaches were closed to

swimmers as a precaution. marine scientists from mystic aquarium in connecticut confirmed the fish was a great white and say they are rarely seen in that area. >> the country's oldest zoo is breaking new ground with an attempt to make things a bit more wild. the latest phase of the program at the philadelphia zoo has just opened and the zoo plans to spend another $2 million to expand it. >> right now they're going to do a feeding. we've come up with this contraps. >> zookeeper samantha nestor feeds orangutans this way because up there is where they like to hang out, part of a system of trails the philadelphia zoo is building from an animal's point of view. >> the idea of creating this network is really coming out of our interest in creating a great experience for animals here. >> this is just the beginning. over the next eight years, organizers will build more pathways across the zoo's 42 acres. the first trail unveiled last

immediate heroic action by a guidance counselor who subdued the shooter prevented further carnage as students evacuated the building. it appeared that the school's emergency evacuation plan worked. now the healing begins for the victim and student body. increased security and counseling have been provided for students and staff. perry hall has a reputation as a top performing school and officials say they will continue to concentrate on that goal as they share concern for both the victim and the suspect. having the first week of school end with a 15-year-old student charged as an adult with attempted first-degree murder and first degree assault is not on the agenda for the school or their new c.e.o. but now it is reality. one lesson for adults is that while gun ownership is a right, that comes with the responsibility of securing weapons so they are not accessible to children. it's time to change the way we clean.

handgun. as they approached the suspect, the suspect ran inside of the house. the officers pursued him. once inside the house, the suspect pulled out a handgun and the officers fired on the suspect. the suspect is in a local hospital treated for injuries. >> the detectives have been placed on routine administrative duty pending an investigation into the shooting. that shooting comes a week after police fired on a man in east -- in south baltimore after he fired a gun in their direction. >> in baltimore county, police have charged a man with an early-morning stabbing in essex. just before 3:00, police responded to the sinix bar in the 5u 5u. they found darryl wilson lovellette suffering from stab wounds. wolf, aned christopher acquaintance of lovellette's.

county police were also called to the 7100 block of darlington drive in parkville at tee bee's place bar, where police found 38-year-old tavares jones. investigators say he was an employee at the bar and was stabbed while breaking up a fight between patrons. jones was taken to the hospital where he later died. police are looking for a suspect. >> city fire officials are trying to learn what sparked a fire that killed one person in east baltimore. here's a picture provided to us by baltimore city fire officials. the fire happened just before 3:00 saturday in the 15000 block of holbrook street. investigators say crews found the body of a man inside the home, pronounced dead on the scene. neighbors say the man was well known in the neighborhood. >> he was a real good guy. everybody loved him in the neighborhood, everybody loved him. i loved him. the whole neighborhood knew him well. >> police say while searching the building, one firefighter fell through the floor into the basement but was not injured. in anne arundel county, police

are trying to determine what caused a car accident that killed two people including a teenager. police say around 10:00 friday night, officers were called to the 3600 block of patuxent river road near root 214 in davidsonville. the driver and a 14-year-old passenger were flown to the hospital where they later died. investigators are trying to determine if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash. >> the shooting at perry hall high hit close to home for some local businesses and now they're finding ways to help out. serpico's pizza and pasta and swan song spirits are donating a portion of proceeds to the family of daniel borowy store owners want to show support as part of the community. >> this family is in a tragic place and anything we can do to help them get out of that tragic place they're in and let them know we are behind them with prayers, then that's what we do. >> mccallister says the store

locations through the city. big news for the state and local economy, a major security company is moving its headquarters from london to edgewood in harford county and bringing with it at least 100 jobs. the company is called smiths detection known for equipment used in government related technology. state officials tell us the move elevates nod become a national leader in homeland security. the state will provide $750,000 in loans to assist the expansion. smiths says it chose edgewood because of proximity to washington, d.c. come march of 2016, consumers in baltimore county will have tons of more places to shop in owings mills including a wegmans. plans approved for the solo cut plant in owings mills for a new shopping center called foundry row, anchored by wegmans at painters mill and ricerstown

>> that was gabe guiterrez reporting. the b.p. oil company is donating a million dollars to hurricane isaac recovery efforts. the money going to the american red cross and salvation army. agencies in louisiana and mississippi will receive half of the donation. those states were battered by isaac's wind and rain. b.p. says it's assisting employees and families in the flooded areas. >> an apparent tornado touched down and caused damage at a small airport in arkansas saturday afternoon. say roofs and walls were several hangars were torn apart, and small planes were scattered like toys. in greenville, north carolina, more than 300 fans were treated for heat-related illnesses at east carolina university's home football game saturday. the game got underway at noon with high humidity and temperatures in the low 90's. of the 300 treated, officials say more than 50 had to be taken to the hospital. a couple of people suffered heart attacks or seizures. five buses had to be brought in

for cooling stations. a man is dead after falling from the upper deck during a football game at the georgia dome. 20-year-old isaac grubb of tennessee was watching north carolina state play tennessee when he fell about 35 feet and landed on another fan. both men were taken to the hospital where grubb later died. an investigation will take place but officials say it appears to have been an accident. >> beachgoers in massachusetts received quite a surprise saturday. the discovery that forced officials to close the beach. >> and more on a deadly mouse borne virus overtaking yosemite national park. >> the chance for rain goes up heading through the day today. we will talk about that. the seven-day forecast and storms in the atlantic, comin ]e

this holiday weekend, an estimated 75,000 people will visit yosemite national park but this pristine reserve comes with a warning. >> there's information about the hantavirus. >> the hantavirus, a rare, rodent borne disease, has been found in curry village, a popular camp site. the centers for disease control confirms six cases in yosemite so far, two fatal. the c.d.c. says 10,000 campers may have been exposed to the deadly virus spread primarily through deer mice. >> symptoms are wide ranging, similar to those you would get with the flu -- muscle aches and pains, fevers, chills, headache. >> we've upped our education and outreach. >> with 91 cabins in yosemite temporarily shut down, the park has been flooded with some 2,000 calls from concerned tourists. >> we have had cancellations. especially here at curry village.

>> this is a wbal tv-11 editorial with president and general manager, dan joerres. >> traditionally, the first day of school signals a new beginning with great anticipation for the school year. unfortunately that was not the case for perry hall high school. a 17-year-old student was shot and critically injured by a 15-year-old fellow student in the school cafeteria. immediate heroic action by a guidance counselor who subdued the shooter prevented further carnage as students evacuated the building. it appeared that the school's emergency evacuation plan worked. now the healing begins for the victim and student body. increased security and

counseling have been provided for students and staff. perry hall has a reputation as a top performing school and officials say they will continue to concentrate on that goal as they share concern for both the victim and the suspect. having the first week of school end with a 15-year-old student charged as an adult with attempted first-degree murder and first degree assault is not on the agenda for the school or their new c.e.o. dr. dallas dance. but now it is reality. one lesson for adults is that while gun ownership is a right, that comes with the responsibility of securing weapons so they are not accessible to children.

promised to pay vendors and the city back the money owed for the race as opposed to what happened last year. in downtown, george lettis, wbal tv-11 news. >> make wbaltv.com your pit stop for baltimore grand prix information. we will show you roads to avoid, give you race information and a map of the course. >> this morning, baltimore city police are investigating a shooting that involved several of their own officers. it happened around 10:00 p.m. last night on lorraine avenue in north baltimore. police say two detectives from the violent crime impact section observed an armed man sitting on the steps of a house. when they approached, he went inside. we are told the detectives followed him and the man drew a semi automatic handgun and pointed it in the general direction of police. >> they saw an individual who they believed to be armed with a handgun. as they approached the suspect, the suspect ran inside of the house. the officers pursued him. once inside the house, the suspect pulled out a handgun and the officers fired on the suspect.

the suspect is in a local to for injuries. >> the detectives have been placed on routine administrative duty pending an investigation into the shooting. that shooting comes a week after police say officers shot and wounded a man in south baltimore after he fired a gun in their direction. >> in baltimore county, police have charged a man with an early-morning stabbing in essex. police responded to the 500 block of eastern boulevard next to sinix bar they found darryl lovellette. suffering multiple stand wound in a parking lot. he was taken to the hospital where he later died. an acquaintance is being held without bail. county police were also called to the 7100 block of darlington drive in parkville at tee bee's place bar, where police found 38-year-old tavares jones. say he was an employee at the bar and was stabbed while breaking up a fight between patrons.

jones was taken to the hospital where he later died. police are looking for a suspect. >> city fire officials are trying to learn what sparked a fire that killed one person in east baltimore. this picture was provided to us city firere officials. the fire happened just before 3:00 saturday in the 15000 block of holbrook street. investigators say crews found the body of a man inside the home, pronounced dead on the scene. neighbors they the man was well known in the neighborhood. >> he was a real good guy. he was a real good guy. everybody loved him in the neighborhood, everybody loved him. i loved him. the whole neighborhood knew him well. >> police say while searching the building, one firefighter fell through the floor into the basement but was not injured. >> in anne arundel county, police are trying to determine what caused a car accident that killed two people including a teenager. police say around 10:00 friday night, officers were called to the 3600 block of patuxent river road. near route 214 in davidsonville.

the driver and a 14-year-old passenger were flown to the hospital where they later died. investigators are trying to determine if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash. >> the shooting at perry hall high school hits close to home for some local businesses now trying to find ways to help out. serpico's pizza and pasta and swan song spirits are donating a portion of proceeds to the family of the victim. store owners say they want to show support as part of the community. >> this family is in a tragic place and anything we can do to help them get out of that tragic place they're in and let them know we are behind them with prayers, then that's what we do. >> mccallister says the store will match any donations made over the weekend and into the week. >> with the democratic national convention in charlotte, north carolina, two days away, president obama will be back on

good, too. >> little monkey in there. and you made your own lace. >> this is pretty easy. i used a string. i made more like a bib necklace because i don't like the flowers behind so i took these pretty flowers and glued them. >> hot glugun? >> requests but be -- yes, but be careful. what i learned, you know a pineapple is ripe -- a lot of people smell them, but you can pull out the top of the leaves. i like to do straws with the flowers and curly fruits. i've glued a twisty tie on to a flower. >> that's it? >> and put on there. stick it on there. >> that's so easy. >> and you can also make these

today, some producing locally heavy amounts of rain. high temperature, 84 degrees. we will give you an update on the tropical atlantic and take you through the seven-day forecast. >> david gregory joins us with a preview of "meet the press." how well did the republicans position themselves? >> the race is deadlocked, the president's approval rating is under 50% and unemployment up over 8%. you put those factors together, mitt romney is in the race. the republican faithful are warming up to him and overall like where they are after months this summer of being pounded by president obama and his political team really going after romney and his bain

background and aspects of his personality and wealth that drove up his negative rating. overall, they're in a fairly good position. one dark spot was the clint eastwood moment that overshadowed the crucial hour of the convention. what was with that? is that done and over with? >> it's striking because these political conventions are totally scripted affairs and this was an off-the-cuff endorsement that went really wrong and gave the democrats a lot of fodder. it really did prove to be a distraction because people were talking less about mitt romney's message, less about his ability to connect to people. when you're putting on a big spectacle that tens of millions of watching, you don't want one of the highly touted acts to go wrong. >> having said that, the democrats are headed into their convention. what do they need to do to solidify votes? >> a couple of things.

the president has to deal with disappointment that he's about hope and change who's more of an establishment figure and has to deal with tremendous disappointment about the state of the economy and why wawx washington can't get anything done. two, he needs to build on his strength -- whether latino votes, women, exploiting the gender gap further and identity politics could trump some of the issues we are debating about, the debt and taxes in terms of what gives the president a structural advantage in the electoral. >> do they try to silence the vice president during this convention? >> oh, no. he'll have a big platform but these are supposed to be scripted affairs. >> they won't have their own clint eastwood come out somehow. we will see. thanks, david. >> ok. >> you can watch "meet the

made a day ahead and it's easy to make, it just takes a little bit of prep. the first thing i do, i've got bacon and sausage cooking on the side and i'm going to scramble one quick egg and dump that in my pan. this can be done ahead of time. >> especially it's something you can give the kids as they're the door to the bus. >> sure. the thing about this one as far as children goes, it has jalapeños in it so stay away from the jalapeños. >> unless they didn't do their homework. >> i have bacon and sausage cooking so i did this ahead of time and really easy to prep. take a little bit of egg wash. i'm going to show you a quick, easy way to do this.

you won't see this. jalapeño goes in after the egg wash. wisconsin sharp cheddar cheese. >> does it have to be wisconsin? >> it doesn't have to but it has a sharp tang. bacon, sausage, scrambled egg, and easy enough, right in. >> you can not put the jalapeño in there, right? >> you don't have to but we call it the kickin' egg roll. we tried it in the kitchen and customer appreciated the heat. first corner fold up, right underneath the jalapeño like an envelope, have the corners come in and continue rolling. take a little bit of that egg wash and glue it into the oil, ready to go. >> as you're doing that.

unfortunately that was not the case for perry hall high school. a 17-year-old student was shot and critically injured by a 15-year-old fellow student in the school cafeteria. immediate heroic action by a guidance counselor who subdued the shooter prevented further carnage as students evacuated the building. it appeared that the school's emergency evacuation plan worked. now the healing begins for the victim and student body. increased security and counseling have been provided for students and staff. perry hall has a reputation as a top performing school and officials say they will continue to concentrate on that goal as they share concern for both the victim and the suspect. having the first week of school end with a 15-year-old student charged as an adult with attempted first-degree murder and first degree assault is not on the agenda for the school or their new c.e.o. dr. dallas dance. but now it is reality. one lesson for adults is that while gun ownership is a right, that comes with the responsibility of securing weapons so they are not accessible to children.
